I was surprised by one of the grandest sights I have ever beheld. An unforgettable picture to the last moment's of one's life. There it rose above the canyon framed by dark forest-clad hillsides, bathed in sunlight. Was it a mirage or a fantastic upbuilding of rose-tinted, silver-edged, blue-shaded clouds? A vision suspended in mid air. I doubted its reality, but it was truly Mt. Shasta. - Edward Stuhl, 1917 journal entry
