In the past 10 years, Stienstra was twice named national Outdoor Writer of the Year, newspaper division, by the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He also has been awarded as California Outdoor Writer of the Year four times, most recently in 2000.
He is the outdoors writer for the San Francisco Chronicle, which distributes his column on the New York Times news Service. Tom lives with his family in Northern California.
