Product Description

by Marcelle Masson

This book contains a collection of Wintu legends, as told to the author by Grant Towendolly, the son of a former headman of the Wintu Indians. Grant was trained by his father for leadership, a preparation which included learning the myths and legends of his people and being entrusted with the preservation of the authentic Wintu stories. Part of his training included the correct way to narrate these stories - for they must be told in a certain ceremonial way, with nothing omitted to simplify or abbreviate the narrative. A description of the Wintu way of life is included in the book, along with fifteen Wintu legends.
